I could see it working if they all get the band back together and believe they still have "it".

They could also show Marty as a failed filmmaker trying to strike lightning twice. It could be an Ed Wood style film about a bunch of people who can't play music well or make great movies but love both mediums. It would all be about the pull to make art even if you're not good at it.
