There have been some staffing shortages at airlines (not just Alaska). It seems to be a mixed bag of reasons

For pilots, there is just a bit of a shortage right now. A few years back, the FAA upped the requirements for US pilots to have 1500 hours before they could fly commercial. Between pandemic buy-outs, retirements, competition from charter and cargo airlines, there seems to be some stiff competition for available, qualified pilots nowadays which is being seen across the airlines.
For call centers, the airlines seem to have reduced their call center staffing too much during the pandemic and have not sufficiently restaffed (that could just be good ole' cost cutting).
Alaska has a lot of debt/costs from the (unnecessary and wasteful) merger with Virgin America
