Interesting ... because that was one dynamic I totally got. (mega spoilers)

And maybe based on personal experience? With my life and family, anyway.
The telling bits I latched onto in the first episode were that Royal is both the patriarch, but also a complete outsider. I haven't figured out what this whole "Hole in the West Pasture" thing is yet, but he has a connection to it. At the very least, it spawned flashbacks to his past, which he seems ashamed about. Or reluctant to share.
But he arrived at the Abbott Ranch as an abandoned orphan. And he tells Autum to "talk to the wife" about purchasing the land. He obviously defers to her when it comes to decisions about the homestead.
But the mark on the land seems shameful to him, like he's responsible for it or something. And he behaved oddly defensively the entire episode.
So, right now, I think he hasn't told the rest of the family because he thinks he is delusional or somehow responsible for this ... mess.
