One could argue that the drive to an individualist identity in America is making collective action harder to accomplish.

One could then raise an opposing point that, if this were the case, why are social protests and unions having such a resurgence of participation?

Maybe all isn't lost. Maybe people will finally squeeze their politicians for the actions that are desperately needed.
