here, we can pay I think $75 per year to one of our fire stations and not be charged for ambulance service for that year.

I can understand a fire department charging for non-emergency or nuisance calls but there should not be for regular emergencies.

This is so unusual to me. This is all covered by our taxes, but obviously in smaller places etc it would differ. I actually called 911 on Sunday.
