It's fair to say we're looking at it the wrong way. AI doesn't have to be intelligent to kill us.

Think of AI like big corporate executives during the turn of the 20th century. They worked people to death for the sake of optimization. An AI in a factory running, say, an assembly line to manufacture automobiles would crush an employee and keep moving if it wasn't programmed *not* to. A self-driving train will plow through a crossing with a school bus struck on the rails if it wasn't programmed *not* to. It's not "Hey, I'm aware... OMG, humans are a threat to my existence! Kill them all!" It's "Must accomplish task at all costs!"
