An iron cross was originally a traditional military medal in Germany. It later became a Nazi symbol after the Nazi regime superimposed a swastika on the medal. The medal was discontinued after World War II, but neo-Nazis and other white supremacists "adopted it as a hate symbol and it has been a commonly-used hate symbol ever since," according to the ADL.
