here's what happened: prosecution offered defendant a deal to plead out the case. defendant didn't like the deal. as you say, the evidence wasn't

incredibly strong against him. instead of taking the plea, defendant rolls the dice with a jury, figuring he won't get anything worse than the deal the prosecutor offered him
which it sounds like he probably got in the end since two charges were not guilty
prosecutor is pissed that he has to try a marginal case so he bends over backward to make it sound as bad as possible to get the best result he can
