they've been trying to mandate those for years.. electric cars didn't work before. the best they've done is a a massively overpriced hybrid. if technology were actually advancing, we'd have electric or hybrid cars that were in a reasonable range for all consumers, not at the price they are now, and especially not those $50k, 18 mile range pieces coming out from Toyota.
capitalism is the best form of advancement... people want to make money, and they'll invent the next big thing for the sake of money.. companies are doing the same thing. heavy taxes will divert money from that research into just staying alive...
