You are doing nothing wrong. That grey mouse is gold. Keep saving up your gold to buy better traps, and cheese.
Swiss is good. The entire addiction to the game is when you catch the rare mouse. I caught a Burglar mouse yesterday and I was giddy with happiness.
Make sure when you log you stock up with cheese. You will continue to check your trap every hour when you are not online. Unless! You run out of cheese.
You can blow the horn every 15 minutes when you are logged in. Sometimes you will get a King's reward (more cheese, points, or gold) by just keeping your game open and blowing the horn.
I will quote Nubby now. "Be patient" :) The rare mice will come.
