You are right in that you associate prestigious with expensive.

You don't understand how competitive admissions is. Students go where they are accepted, not where they would love to go. So sometimes people end up going to expensive schools that aren't as prestigious as others.
The med schools in the Caribbean are expensive but have zero prestige.
