*laugh* When a run wasn't going well, I just kept telling myself to get to the halfway point

Not that it was necessarily going to get better on the way back or anything would change but if nothing else the motivation would change or there wouldn't necessarily be a standard motivation required for the second half of the run.

For an out and back run, if one gets to the turn around...well one or way or another, you've got to do the second half cause what's the option? Stop and sob by the side of trail? Ok, yes, that actually did cross my mind as an option but realistically just gotta get back
