if an HOA allows solar, why would the panels matter? they look the same as what a company will sell them for.

the grid thing is interesting. there are devices like a grid-tie inverter no back feed that can keep your solar power from producing more than is needed. so if you're producing enough power from solar to run your home, you stop drawing power. if you produce more than is needed, you don't get the benefit of that unless you store to batteries.
