Hell is not the torture, in the classic sense—Hell is the absence of God—die,go to Heaven, see God (and your family) and feel overwhelming cosmic love -- (edited)

The torture stuff came a lot earlier. There are stories in the New Testament that depict hell as a place of torment, for example.
