Hell is not the torture, in the classic sense—Hell is the absence of God—die,go to Heaven, see God (and your family) and feel overwhelming cosmic love -- (edited)

Then you get sent to Hell and that loss of overwhelming love is the “torture” you live with.
You are empty, lonely, and heartbroken for eternity, on an immense scale.
That’s why Satan/Lucifer is in charge of Hell—because that’s his punishment too—never to see God and feel the love
The classic torture stuff was added in the Middle Ages, by the Church, to keep people in-line as people respond more to physical violence and pain, as a motivator
