I lost weight and drink diet soda. I found it wasn't the issue. For me it was carbs (bread, sugar in other foods, etc.)

Lowering carbs and not eating after 8pm and not eating breakfast (kind of an intermittent fasting) was my key. Lowering carbs makes your body burn your energy stores (fat). Be sure to eat good fats and protein. The intermittent fasting isn't early has hard as it sounds. My big problem now is late night eating which I still am working on curtailing. I feel much better when I refrain from eating after dinner. I drink lots of water also so I don't get hungry in the morning. I adjusted to that pretty quickly.
