It seems to be a meditation on emotion and the human experience. Nathan is determined to put himself and others in situations where authentic emotion can be elicited from faux scenarios, but he can't go deep enough to capture it.
He keeps folding back and retracing because this is experimental and he's learning things as he goes along.
The level of commitment and trust - if it's real - among the actors involved, not to mention the "real" people is extraordinary.
I think the first episode is still my favorite - I watched it twice plus the last 10 minutes a 3rd time. At this point I have to conclude that Kor is a real person and the situation was real for him. The look of panic and adrenaline when it came time to have the real conversation was (had to be) real, as far as thinking the entire thing is scripted or not.
LOL moments:
When Kor was more obsessed with winning the trivia night than with resolving his conflict.
When they showed the digital mirror used to age Nathan. And again every other time they showed it - WTF.
When they had Nathan move into a fake apartment to replicate Thomas' moving into a fake apartment to replicate the original store clerk's experience.
All the cyclical conversations following the decision tree to get the parent's permission.
When he asked the actor playing Adam what his real name was and he said Adam because they've been instructed to never break character.
When they planted produce in the garden to simulate the passage of time.
