Are "long distance" phone calls still a thing?

Not international calls, but, say a New York number calling a California number.
Is that still long distance?

I think it got complicated by cellphones. I had a friend who moved down from Northern CA but still had that number. I was paying LD to call her.

Our landline AT&T contract got jacked up by AT&T. We pay $5k/mo for landlines including LD contract. Without the contract they've hit us for $80k

Something I was wondering this weekend: are human operators still a thing? Like "Hi, can you connect me to Max in Virginia"?

I'm not aware of a cell phone plan that charges for them, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were still landline plans that do. -- nm
