in a parallel issue, in the '89 san fran quake I saw bellowing black smoke from the underground transit, turned out it was collected dust in the vents

but I and many others thought it was a fire in the tubes/station
I mean thick black smoke like when a coal roller blows out a huge cloud to annoy a prius driver
