You can drive a truck through that claim, and I have. They only show percentages, never actuals. The one time they did, I immediately saw the shrinking audience and called them out.
Why they're afraid to show the actual numbers is anyone's guess but there can be two reasons, both amounting to avoiding embarrassment.
- Either Nielsen doesn't have a full picture of viewership (the constant under counting of YouTube demonstrates this) and they don't want to show their blind spot.
- Or the networks/streamers don't want to show their shrinking numbers as that directly correlates to money (i.e. advertising revenue) so they have an understanding with Nielsen to never show their actuals.
