Here this conflict started, the likelihood of Ukraine ever retaking Crimea seemed an impossibility. I honestly feel it remains that way. If anything, a negotiated peace would probably boil down to “everyone recognizes Russia’s control of Crimea and Ukraine gets into NATO.”
These people fleeing… are they recent carpetbaggers or longtime native ethnic Russians who feel they’ll be persecuted if Ukraine regains control? I see their logic, of course. With a bridge between mainland Russia and Crimea still not complete (right?), the only way out is through Russian occupied Ukraine and if Ukraine is making a push to remain that territory, I can see how those people might feel isolated. So, begone. Maybe it’s time Russians had a taste of the refugee crisis Ukrainians have been experiencing for months.
