This is what I believe

I believe that Nathan Fielder is putting on a Borat skit where we are the mark. I believe that he’s got an Andy Kaufman level of commitment to his emotionless introvert bit. And I believe there are hints throughout the series that this is all a put-on. From the opening scene where Kor - and therefore us - is chided for never having seen Nathan For You, to the constant repetition of “Cheap Chick in the City”. They’re telling us something. The obvious plants to the trivia answers in the first episode, the absurdities of the skeet shooting and the pool… I feel the easy trivia questions are a clear gaff. But things escalate as the episodes go full inception. Expecting the acting students to all get the same jobs as their targets is an impossibility… one of them got a job as a butcher? Another got a job as a mechanic? The way Patrick (the gold digger guy) disappears without a resolution is unlikely given that he thought he was due a payout from the actor’s grandfather. And too many of the people we meet seem like caricatures (the Jesus lady, the born again pot head, Patrick the hick, etc.) Maybe this is laid bare in season 2, or maybe Nathan continues to play it straight. But I don’t believe any of this is real, even if some of the people involved may indeed have been civilians unwittingly drawn into the joke.
