We had a friend stay in our house as they were between places, for the almost 2 months we were out of town. Bad idea, turns out.

They didn't clean... even after they left. They roped a friend of ours into picking them up after they moved out to get some things and clean before we got home.. but she has no idea what they did while they were inside for 2 hours.

dishes are missing. indoor plants are dead. they called the fire department because they "smelled gas" and it turned out to be the compost bucket they had not taken out in 6 weeks... or maybe the dead mouse in a trap behind the fridge that was a crispy mummy by the time we found it.

they didn't mow the grass.. it was several feet tall... our house looked abandoned when we got home.

they didn't water plants.. things we planted that are heat hearty are the same size as when we planted them 2 months ago.

basically they sat around and watched tv, worked from home for 2 months and did nothing else.

our lovely friend came to check on the house, saw how nasty everything was, and deep cleaned the bathroom and kitchen. i wish she hadn't, but i'm also glad she did. we were already seething... coming home to absolute filth would have been the end.

we did the right thing in letting them stay, but ... no good deed, etc.
