So, it's based on Dance of Dragons. I did a deep dive on this the other day, and you're right in the broad strokes.
The woman recently named his heir is the "half-year queen" or something like that, even though she lives a long life.
I like the story they've chosen because there are a ton of twists I hadn't expected and a lot of good cutaway wars for short-term intrigue and drama.
The big shocker involves how Daemon plays into the whole thing.
However, I expect that they'll go off script sooner rather than later. The king grows super-fat over time. This story seems to be giving him fatal illnesses soon. I'm not sure they do the full 16-year time jump. If they do, he'll probably die almost immediately afterward in a fat suit.
Someone described the new Hand as Littlefinger and Tywin Lannister combined. I'm hoping that's what they're doing.
