Can anyone make a case as to why the promotion/relegation system isn't the better system?

It allows only moderately rich people to own teams and build them up until they're obscenely rich.
It essentially lifts the salary cap as it allows for players to be paid infinite amounts of money so that the uber-rich owners can keep their teams from dropping in the ranks.
It allows for players to continue to grind out a living even if they're not the best.
It keeps owners from tanking their teams because they're cheap bastards.
It allows for even small communities to have skin in the game (like how does Green Bay, a city of 100,000 people, have a professional sports team?)
It allows for smaller teams to earn revenue by loaning out their top players.
