There are pros and cons to both systems.

Some cons:
There appears to be a lack of a competitive balance if you look at the big soccer leagues. Only 4 or 5 teams have any chance of winning in the premier league. They've had 7 different title winners in the last 28 years. It's worse in La Liga and the Bundesliga where there are even less teams that can win it all.

Teams in the US are much more financially stable than nearly all of the soccer teams. While they have rich owners their teams are always dealing with finance issues and massive debt.
