It’s not horrific but I have limited experience. Both times I’ve been there with students, we stayed at the Galt House which is on the river.

It’s been a few years but it was right in the mix of stuff and was nice.
Depending on what you want to do there, anywhere along 4th street live is going to have stuff going on. Lots of restaurants and bars.
