I think it's a good example of a few things.
One, I wasn't picking up on what (exactly) you were criticizing. Now that I've seen some images of the speech, I agree -- that overly dramatized red lighting was pure political manipulation. And it undermined the seriousness of the message.
But speaking practically, what other options did the White House have? There was little if any live coverage of the speech, correct? Am I right on that?
Getting any TV coverage at all, in any form, requires drama. We've known that for years, at least since the Reagen Administration. "If it bleeds, it leads" is more true today than ever.
So how do we (as in "We the People") push back on that? How do we get our leaders to tone down the bullshit like what we're talking about now?
