San Antonio — In May of 2015, emails that Fox San Antonio obtained show county leaders in Uvalde, Val Verde, and Kinney County asking for help from the Governor's Office and DPS's Director Steven McCraw. Help was denied for a failing first responders radio system, which serves 9 counties, DPS, National Guard, and other state and federal agencies.
The system, first built in 2003 due to the September 11th attacks on the US, is now 19 years old. With the extreme Texas heat, an ice storm last year, and age the system is on the brink of completely collapsing.
In this investigative story, Fox San Antonio uncovered a thread of emails that date back to 2015. In the emails, county leaders are asking for funding for the aging system.
During the May 24th mass shooting in Robb Elementary in Uvalde, the radios were not working properly according to county leaders. But during testimony in the Robb Elementary shooting Senate hearing, DPS Director Steven McCraw says he had knowledge of the problem but had not communicated with anyone from the 9 county region regarding this.
