I've been avoiding past tense, plural, and noun forms of verbs thinking they had culled those. I've also gotten the sense that between two words that fit, the more common and well-known word is the one they've selected as the solution, but I guess that could just be me interpreting probability as divine intervention.

Still, since NYT acquired the game, I've had the feeling that the possible solutions were modified from the original word list.
