The biggest issue with solar production right now is that it's at the "wrong" time of day for needs

Pumped storage would mitigate a lot if that. Use excess power to pump water up a hill into a reservoir, let it out through a turbine when you need power. Definitely has some efficiency loss but lets you use it as a base grid.
