Maverick represents the extreme exception. Halloween 2021 is the playbook to use.

There were 9 titles that garnered at least 1,000 screens on opening weekend in 1997. September 2022 has included 11, 12 if we count Brahmastra, which maxed at 810 but is one of the biggest hits of the month.
People don't go see mediocre product in theaters as often now. That's what Hollywood hasn't accepted yet. You're either a tentpole, or you should do multi-platform release.
