The idea that box office now is only tentpole releases, and the mid-range films that come out don't do well is just wrong. -- (edited)

Just a quick glance down the list linked below shows that it's tentpole releases (Lightyear, Fantastic Beasts, Morbius, Moonfall) bombing the most.

The only real mid range bombs I can find are The Northman and Firestarter. The Northman is suspect given that it cost close to $90 million to make.

Here's just some of the mid-range films that did well this year:

Elvis - $150 million
Uncharted - $144 million
Nope - $123 million
The Lost City - $105 million
Bullet Train - $99.2 million
The Bad Guys - $96.7 million
DC League of Super-Pets - $90 million
The Black Phone - $89.8 milllion
Where the Crawdads Sing $89.6 million
Scream - $81.6 million
Everything Everywhere All At Once - $70 million
Dog - $61.8 million
Jackass Forever $57.7 million
Dragon Ball Super: $34.9 million
Jujutsu Kaisen 0: $34.5 million
The Woman King: North of $70 million
Don't Worry Darling: North of $50 million
