In response to "La Brea Tar Pits has been selected as one of the most important geological heritage sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences -- (link)" by Meg

I used to work in an office building across the street from the Tar Pits. We had a 3 story underground garage...

each floor had methane detectors and metal troughs along the walls there were toughs to collect petroleum that seeped through the walls.

Amazingly, Los Angeles has been digging a subway tunnel under the street that separated us from the Tar Pits. Fortunately, they do have experts on site to examine artifacts that are dug up.

But if methane and petroleum leaked into a garage, I hope the subway has a better plan.
