That first category is 'breakthrough role' where a person starts garnering attention becomes known, at least in movie circles and to an extent in the general public. But if your breakthrough role is your signature role than your career sure did plateau quickly.
I think of Julia Roberts. Her breakthrough was Mystic Pizza, then she had Steel Magnolias, but Pretty Woman made her a household name and superstar.
I think it also depends somewhat on the staying power of a movie overall.
