LIR: Dano, it's not the first time that we've had a split (or "spoiler") Governor's race. There was a virtual mirror image race in 1990.


At that time, Oregon was a conservative state dominated by Republicans. Gov. Barbara Roberts (D) became the first woman elected governor in Oregon because her opponent, David Frohnmeyer, a moderate Republican, lost a ton of votes to a conservative independent candidate, Al Mobley, backed by the emerging hard-right religious conservatives. Frohnmeyer got 40% of the vote, but Mobley earned about 15%; Roberts was elected with 45% of the vote.
