honestly they mostly don’t hear the difference.

Like Chekhov’s nuclear wessels, or Swedes who flip J/Y and CH/SH sounds. It’s an unusual sound in an unexpected place, and even if you know on some level, a lot of people just mentally brush past it unless they’re really concentrating.
There’s also plenty of research showing that if you’re not exposed to certain sounds growing up, you literally don’t hear them differently. That’s the root of the Japanese L/R confusion. Brains are weird, and language is tricky.
