Musk is an ass, but he invested in Tesla in 2004 and became CEO in 2008 and they didn't deliver a car until 2009.

Tesla was founded in 2003. It's hard to think what happened in that first year somehow negates Musk's involvement over the next 5 years. Let alone the last 13.
Put another way, Musk has been at the company 19 of its 20 years in existence.
