lithium didn’t destabilise Bolivia. It’s a narrative that doesn’t make any sense, but Morales is pushing anyway.

The whole thing about Bolivia setting the global price of lithium is nonsense. Resources are too widely distributed for that to be possible, and a huge chunk of Bolivia’s is metallurgically tricky and difficult to extract (which was a big pet of the reason they’ve been struggling to get off the ground). They’ll probably always produce at a higher price than Australia, Chile, or Argentina. Plus the companies that are moving into Bolivia post-coup are still mostly Chinese. Even the giant miners don’t have the clout to pull off a coup, and they’re all Anglo-Australian, don’t really get in to lithium, and really don’t want to piss off the Chinese.
