I went to Aftershock and came back with a book recommendation: Sellout: The Major Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo, and Hardcore (1994-2007)

by Dan Ozzi

I vaguely remember purchasing the audiobook during an Audible sale but after making the first stop on the drive up to my parents place in Northern California, it seemed like something that both and FH would have an interest in. The book would be the drive background for the rest of the drive as well as time on the road to and from the festival.

I'd purchased pretty much based on the title (must have been on sale) so had no idea that the book is set up as chapters dedicated to a band / their first major label release.

Starts with Green Day and ends with Against Me. Actually the last two band chapters are Rise Against and Against Me and I was more entertained by the idea of the cross over band Rise Against Me than I should have been.

But the bands covered are;
Jawbreaker
Jimmy Eat World
Blink 182
At the Drive-In
The Donnas
Thursday
The Distillers (!!)
My Chemical Romance and then the superband that exists only in my head

During the At The Drive-In chapter, I so wanted to go see one of their shows but of course that type of energy couldn't last.

Similarly never heard of Thursday but they were performing at Aftershock the day after we listened to their chapter.

The kind of bittersweet one was that The Distillers chapter started during the drive away from the festival on Friday night and wrapped up during the drive to the festival on Saturday. It would've been super timing if they'd played that day as originally scheduled.

Anyways, super recommended for being a snap shot of the music business trying to find the next Green Day while the actual bands are under serious fire from part of their fans for selling out as well as towards the later chapters both the band and the labels are in trouble as the shift to digital happens.
