oh I know, one of the last things I did at my previous job was shut down both the 401k and pension/profit-sharing plan

And even though I researched and spec'd out a replacement 401k plan they still hadn't implemented it a year later.
It just seems to me that the amount of inertia involved in coming into a job should mean that the benefit and commitment terms you came in under remain the same until you leave.
