I asked my intern about the thumbs up emoji and whether she considers it passive aggressive.

Her response was "no, though if someone who doesn't *usually* use a thumbs up emoji did use it, I might interpret it as passive aggressive."
Also, if you say "ok" with a period after it in a text, that might be interpreted as passive aggressive by that age group.
But like anything, she said, it's all situational.
