Yeah…that’s idiotic. Every other sport that’s popular in the US has a multi-round playoff bracket. That hasn’t kept the NFL or NBA from popularity

Baseball’s heyday was oddly…when no other major sport existed to a degree of being impactful.
The NBA started in 1948, the NFL really didn’t get going until the mid 60’s as a major force (Super Bowl era), the NHL was still 6 teams iirc until the mid 60’s.
Baseball is a sport that was in many ways, the only game in town.
It’s not the playoffs that killed interest, it’s that baseball isn’t exciting constantly and there are far better options out there for entertainment.
