I see two possibilities.

One: No one has quite been able to replicate the userbase stickiness of Twitter, which has great value and could last for decades or centuries if properly stewarded. Its asynchronous nature is perfectly suited to the stars and beyond.
Two: He wants to kill it with fire.
He might be intending #1, but unwittingly unleashing #2. Or he might be doing it on purpose.
