In response to "French colleague: "ciao is said by French-speaking people so much that I legit thought it was a French word until I was an adult and discovered it was -- nm" by Italian."

Also it's a fine line when something is an borrowed word still in another language and when it becomes just part of the language that borrowed it.

Like, sushi comes from Japanese. But it's ridiculous to say that sushi isn't an English word now. At what point did it stop being one and become the other? Impossible to say.
