Highlights

• Humans adapt the way they speak when addressing cats.

• On an acoustical point of view, this speech is mainly characterised by an elevated pitch.

• This result was found for women as well as men, in laboratory conditions as well as through direct human – cat interactions.

Pet-directed speech (PDS), which has been mainly studied in dogs, shares some acoustic features with infant-directed speech (IDS), used when talking to young children (www.sciencedirect.com)
