Back before the war, the State Department nearly went nuclear on Germany because of the Nord Stream pipeline.

U.S. saw that increased German reliance on Russia natural gas would make Germany beholden to the Russians. I appreciate that Germany is in a tough position but it's time to rip off the band-aid.
