If you say anything in public today, someone can record it on a smartphone, right? Why should social media offer more protection than real life?

But your question is a good one. My instinct is that people should be able to use whatever nickname they want. However, the verification process ensures immediate accountability if they do something wildly illegal.
As a recent example, Kevin Nash's son died of a seizure last week at 26. Nobody would say anything to Kevin Nash's face ever. He got death threats and other vile DMs while grieving for his son. That's possible only due to the anonymity of the internet.
