...the processor on the DVD player is probably an older one - say, 32 bit - and the vendor has stopped supporting older processors. They'll only develop apps for newer processors. It's like trying to use an old iPhone. Some apps won't work because the developers won't support older CPUs.
It could also be security certs where they expired and the manufacturer won't - or forgot - to renew them so device won't speak to service any more.
