*light dawns* CounterSocial (and Trump's TruthSocial) are single-server communities; Mastodon is a big multi-server community ("federation"). All

using the same code, so they work the same. (Well, I assume TruthSocial works the same.)

I think it probably comes down to whether you like and trust the server administrator. The guy who started CounterSocial was apparently viewed pretty skeptically at first, but users feel the service has proven it's a nontoxic space.

But this means it's kind of a pain to choose a server on Mastodon. You probably want to read the About page for any one you consider.
